Private Rehab on the Gold Coast: Admission and Travel Checklist

Planning private rehab on the Gold Coast? Check the treatment location, assessment, withdrawal arrangements, travel, insurance and aftercare before booking.

Written and fact-checked by RehabFinder. It is general information, not medical advice, and it has not been reviewed by a clinician.

Choosing private rehab on the Gold Coast involves more than comparing accommodation. Before booking treatment or travel, establish which service will assess the person, where the program takes place and how care will continue when they return home.

This is an admission and travel checklist, not a ranking of facilities or a clinical recommendation. If someone is in immediate danger, call 000. Seek professional advice about treatment and safe withdrawal before arranging a stay.

Check whether the program is actually on the Gold Coast

Start with the Gold Coast treatment directory or Gold Coast private-service search. Open individual profiles and confirm the service location.

A consulting room, an organisation's office and its residential program can be different places. A Brisbane listing is not a Gold Coast listing. If you are considering services outside the area, keep them in a separate part of your shortlist and ask where the proposed stay takes place.

Confirm the address needed for admission and whether the provider gives arrival instructions privately. Do not infer a residential address from a map showing an office.

Arrange the assessment before booking travel

Ask whether the service can conduct the initial assessment remotely and what information it needs. Confirm whether a GP or specialist referral is required and who will decide whether the offered program is suitable.

Before committing to transport or accommodation, ask:

  • Has admission been approved, or is assessment still pending?
  • Is the proposed arrival date confirmed?
  • What documents must be supplied before arrival?
  • Who should we contact if travel plans change?
  • The GP referral guide explains how to clarify the difference between making an enquiry and meeting admission requirements.

    Establish where withdrawal care happens

Ask whether withdrawal management is offered at that location, arranged at another service or required before admission. If care involves two services, clarify the assessment, transfer arrangements and responsibility for coordinating them.

healthdirect advises seeking medical help about withdrawal. Ask the treating clinician whether and when travel is appropriate. A beachside setting or private accommodation does not tell you what medical support is available.

Read our detox and rehabilitation guide for questions about separate programs.

    Plan arrival and family involvement

Ask the provider about transport from your arrival point, check-in times, approved items to bring and any practical accessibility requirements. Confirm transport charges and who makes the arrangements.

For family members, ask about visiting, phone contact and available family sessions before making separate travel bookings. Contact arrangements differ between services; do not assume visits are permitted immediately or that a family program is included.

Ask what the person entering treatment needs to consent to before family members can receive updates. Write down a contact person for practical admission questions.

Check the quote, insurance and cancellation terms

Request a written quote for the proposed service and stay. Ask which assessment, withdrawal, accommodation, transport and aftercare items are included and which are separate.

If using private health insurance, confirm the specific provider and admission with the insurer. Ask about treatment categories, waiting periods, excess and excluded charges. Private residential treatment and an insured hospital admission are not interchangeable.

Check what happens to deposits if assessment finds the program unsuitable or admission dates change. Obtain the provider's written terms before paying. Our funding guide helps structure these questions.

    Plan support after returning home

If the person lives outside the Gold Coast, ask how the discharge plan connects with their local GP and other treating professionals. Confirm whether follow-up appointments are in person or remote, who organises them and whether they carry separate fees.

Ask for a clear contact plan if concerns arise after discharge. Do not assume that follow-up remains accessible from another state simply because it is listed as aftercare.

The location of a stay is one decision; the support available after it is another. Include both in the shortlist discussion with the assessing team.

Know where to ask for Queensland treatment information

Queensland Health's Adis provides confidential alcohol and drug counselling, information and referral on 1800 177 833. It supports individuals, families and professionals considering treatment options.

For a provider enquiry, use the admission checklist to record answers and outstanding questions. Then browse Gold Coast services or request a callback from the services you choose. Confirm assessment and admission arrangements before finalising travel.
