John Hunter Hospital at New Lambton Heights is Hunter New England Local Health District's tertiary referral hospital. Its drug and alcohol presence is a consultation liaison service run by the district's Drug and Alcohol Clinical Services, which assesses patients in the hospital and links them to district treatment. There is no drug and alcohol inpatient unit here; the district's 12-bed inpatient withdrawal unit is at Belmont Hospital. Referral and advice go through the district's central intake line.

The Lakeview Unit is a twelve-bed inpatient withdrawal management unit on the Belmont Hospital campus at Belmont, south of Newcastle, run by Hunter New England Local Health District's Drug and Alcohol Clinical Services.
